I have been meaning to write something on weddings for the longest time. That time has come. I dont know who these are on the above picture, but let me say all the things I love about it. Bride and the groom are radiant. Now you see all these weddings on the Wedding Show on Citizen TV where the bride and groom are looking like the have been forced to have a wedding and well that is not nice. Why are you sulking on your wedding day?!

I love weddings, which girl doesn't?
2. From the bit we can see of the bride's gown and general look, TOP MARKS! She has big hair so she has kept everything else minimal, just her dress and the veil.
3. The groom is spotting the classic black suit.
4. The bridesmaids, though I dont know how I feel about the sleeves there, but  look good too, a nice earth tone color was chosen for the dresses.

That is more or less how you wedding should look in pictures.

So lets get on with it. First things first.

YOUR GOWN

Now I dont know how women think, but if I was getting married and scouting the market for a gown, in this age and era, my first stop would be google- google is a friend I tell you, take my word for it. So I did just that, I went to google. Loads and loads of nice things. I think what most of my women don't know is that LESS IS MORE; imprint this in your head, less is more, less is classy. And by less I dont mean you go dressed like a hooker. Take a look.

Have a good look at this whole outfit, its big at the bottom yes, but less is what has been done to it then look at her accessories, small and discrete, what you end up with is a timeless piece. You know the kind of gown where nobody will point at your pictures ten years later and go like "oh that was 1983 right?" Who wants that?

You are spoilt for choice!! So many incredibly good ideas. But noo, we have to pick ugly; please note the fabric that is used in these gown, do you see anything there shiny shiny? are you seeing them wearing all their favourite white things? The thing with us is this is the day we choose to wear all those white things we have nowhere to go with to, chocker, mara I dont know bangles, watches, clutch bags plus remember you have to hold the flowers!

And the curvy girl just sit down, because I know you want to tell me, oh my size bla bla bla... I have told you what to do with that katumbo especially on a day like this, there must be some sacrifices you are willing to make; particularly on this day!

Please note her skirt has ruffles not gathers!

And who said a curvy girl cant be sassy, I love this short skirt look below, sexy but still has loads of class.

And before  you start shouting ati where are the examples, again, take a seat. Who remembers this cute mama, whose groom was acting all kinds of crazy, I think he is a pastor. She looked exquisitely flawless, radiant and picture perfect, and she is curvy! her groom nailed it too. Except for the parts where he was rolling on the grass and his best man was throwing him several shades of the "bitch please" look. That was priceless:-)

Now with all that knowledge, you know how the kenyan mama is going to do it? Your friends and yourself is cheating you that shiny is good, you want to wear satin and polyester on your wedding day because you want to be all shinny like a princess, and your best of friends is telling you oh that is just soo cute!!! Ditch that woman and get a gay guy, she is not looking out for your best interest! and really its not that I hate princess look, love it.
I love it like this.

Or this

Please (I cant say this enough) look at the way these women have accessorized! Minimal and on point, now you have seen all that then you go like this. Whats this? Why are you doing this to you and your guests?

Do I need to tell you what is wrong here? NO? I thought so.

THE AFRICAN LOOK

You may not want to have the classic white gown, that british kind of thing. You want to be an african queen!!! (bless your dear heart). That is all good. Different is always a good thing. Now in this case I strongly suggest you borrow a leaf from our naija sisters. They are experts.
Look at that!! As you can see the other thing our naija sisters have shindad us in is MAKE UP! They are too way ahead of us, but I am going to discuss that as a topic on its own. Abeg ma sista, you dont find this nice oo? If you dont find this nice, then holy water is all you need. In gallons.
There are many ideas

Find something that works for you. Our very own Paticia Mbela does amazing pieces. I had shown you that earlier here.
For the lazy one who dont want to click on that link.

This is how you add color to your gown. Not those things I was seeing at the Kisumu Fashion Week

HEAD PIECE - VEIL

This simple small piece of cloth is a disaster with most of us. First and foremost it should not look like a mosquito net you just picked off the rack from Nakumatt Supermarket. Once again, simplicity is key. Make a statement but in a subtle classy kind of way. You are the bride we can see you already, dont fear.
And you dont have to have a veil, you could go for something like this if you cant make up your mind. Very nubian, very royal.

It is not written on stone that you have to have a veil! And now on to the length, a short veil is always safe.
I love the italian veil; thats what  I call it but I am sure it has a name, and the only person I ever saw it with is Jules, and I have not seen anyone with it ever since! LOVED HER VEIL to bits, this is how it looks like.

And do you see her hanging many many things around her neck? NO? why are you doing it?

Eds Note
Jules tells me the veil is called a Mantilla. Go find it!

On the length of veil unless you want to look as tacky as Mariah Carey, just dont go there; And by long I mean it is trailing 7 meters behind you. Otherwise if the word Duchess is going come before your name after you sign the marriage certificate then please by all means wear a super trail.

MAKE UP - TOO IMPORTANT. THINK OF IT THE SAME WAY YOU THINK OF YOUR CAKE.

And by that I dont mean CAKE YOUR FACE with make up, which is more or less what most of us have done in the past!
I dont know why we cant get it with the make up, yet in my opinion it is more important than the cake. Seriously how many pictures of your face are going to be on the album, and your cake?
It is an important day, for you and for your face too, so why would you let your friend who is not a make up artist work on your face? Those false eyelashes that are so huge your eyes cant open? and the glittery white eyeshadow, and then you forgot foundation even though you know your skin is bad?
Please invest in a good make up artist; And you could go for a test run, just ask around then go over and tell the makeup artist you want him/her to try out the look on your face, best try these weeks prior. If you can go for cake tasting, you can go for make up testing.

I am not done. So next we will shall go onto the brides maids and the other things that come with weddings, I am going to leave a teaser of some of the comments the girls had on what they hate on weddings, will post the rest later

  • Verah Vashti Okeyo: And then the bridesmaid make baloon dresses and some of them like Verah Okeyo have no 'assets' to hold the dress. Ei a stick in a basket is the thing to decribe the phenomenon omera

  • Connie Ketry: Those guests who come wearing jeans and branded T-shirts should be taken to the Hague..it is rude not make an effort to dress up to attend a wedding unless it is a matter of quantity over quality!(people should invite close friends )

Good night we talk later! Cheers

Ladies, so let me say it again. For those who dont remember, I started this blog because I wanted to show my Nairobi women, how so easy it is to dress well and at an affordable rates. That is the reason I called it TOI. Please go through the links and get the concept. I am here to inspire, that is why I also send you links to other better more experienced bloggers so that you get the idea. That I ended up selling just sort of came with it.
I dont really sell clothes. I don't have a stall or shop where you can come and pick clothes. But I do shop for people. And this too came about as people wanted to have what I was getting at Gikomba.
What you see here in the Toi shop, is what is left after I go shop for people.
I can also come to your house and we go over your wardrobe and just spice it up, see what goes with what, and see what to add.

So this is how shopping for you should work; You give me the money I go shop or you pay me and I come with you. As you know I have another regular job. Blogging as it is dont pay:-)

If something is not clear please feel free to mail me and I will clarify that. I can go out on a mission to look for you stuff. While on that mission if I get something nice that is not your size I will pick that too at my cost (this something nice is usually my size) then if someone really likes it, you can buy it because I will put it up anyway. I try to photograph the pieces I get from the market.

So on to good things. We have been lagging behind in Make Up.
Jules is still working on the eyebrow video tutorial, yes it is taking long, but you know somebody has to put beer on the table. So meanwhile this pictorial smokey eyes tutorial that Christine sent me will just hav to do: I love it, I am going to try it, though I dont think us dark women do smokey very well, but that is something  we can debate.
Let me know what you think.

Before I say something about the block heel, look at the heel and toes of these two women, that is how an open heel or peep toe should fit you, your toes should not be sticking out of the shoe, and your heel should not hang out.
A shoe looks good if it fits perfect. That you choose to buy a small size and you know very well you will get cones is your thing, that is okay if the heels are closed. Suffer in silence, happens to me all the time:-) I have bought a shoe size 40 and yet I know it really is tight, I am a size 41, but they were so damn cute and they were the only ones left, my eternal excuse of buying shoes a size smaller!

I know block heels are not usually that cute, but they are comfortable, and if you can get lucky and get a really good one it can be sexy. I saw a lady jana evening in town, with a black one that look almost like this; Sexy and you are walking upright, not struggling in your own shoes. Has happened to me too, but only in drunk moments. So here is to the block heel!
Please make a point of coming to the blog! I can't ask you enough, so I dont have to post twice, here and on facebook:-)
On the 17th I have a request to take one of the girls to Gikosh, so those who want to get on that bandwagon, buzz a woman!

COFFEE AND CRUMBS

I missed Blankets and Wine. AGAIN.. Really I shall never go to that event at this rate, and my favourite electro band Liquid Deep was there! if that, a blanket and a good bottle of wine cant motivate me then I dont know what else shall:-)
But I see one blogger that I follow went. So there is a picture! Miss Vavavum

Woi it has been along time coming! I had disappeared, under the Radar, ask you leafy suburb friends where that is:-)
3. There is no number 2 reason,
Anyway bombs have been going on in Eastleigh, now I dont know why people want to trash my beloved country, but it is getting to much yawa!

On the outfit! So on friday we went to Rhumba at deamvillage, that is where all old mamas like meself gather on Friday! I decided to try this Sai's outfit. You know the bag, the only thing you have not seen there is the scarf which I got for 2sok from Tom Mboya Street and the Ring for 150sok. The jacket, skirt and vest are from my stuff which, well did not come from Toi/Gikosh but can be found there.
The skirt, belt and Jacket I bought at Mango a whiiiiiile back, insert 4 years, and the vest I bought from those 5Euro shops owned by Indians in Antwerp.

My Hair Do which I totally love, is a weave, (idol) it cost 760KSH. It is synthetic but can be tonged and blow dried etc. Now I forget the name of the shop, but is on Tom Mboya Street, just a few shops after Galitos.

Vio, who has a salon at Kenya Cinema did the hair and she is really good, she even filled out for me the bangs after mine ran out. I highly recommend. So holla if you want her number! She did it for 8sok.

We need a Christmas carol

I have even included lyrics, sing away.
Now I love this Jennifer girl, really and the way she has lost so much weight, good stuff lakini sasa hii ni kitu gani?

Very Bad, dont try this even if you are 16

Due to my other rather tight schedule, I have not attended any event, and by the look of things I might not even attend the Eryka Badu concert. Read as I have calculated the budget, BRRRRR!!! enough to go to the coast for 5 days!
Now you know that is a tough decision for someone like me, I have not taken it to prayer, but I am still struggling with it.

I know I have two storos to bring to the table, I have been busy; so I am on it

It has been so long since I said something on MakeUp, but now I have realised preaching does not help, so I will just be using pictures, here is a start

Coffee and Crumbs

So I have been asked to dress some beauty peagants out of town, the event is on Sato, I have already met a few of them, should my camera not fail me I will update accordingly.

Of movies and things nice.........
Now I did not know that Whitney Houston had done a movie just before she died. It is brilliant, am not big on musicals, but this is the kind of musical I like. Whitney was brilliant, and am not saying that because she is dead;
The storyline is a bit weak because its what we know, I mean we have all heard that in other movies, but I still loved it!!
AND my favourite was the STYLE!!! aki now I am full swing on the 50's!!!
I have a wedding and a wedding and a wedding to attend before this month ends,  yeah those are way too many weddings but the world is ending on the 21st if you have not heard, well now you know.
I am going 50s full swing before rapture!!

Stylish Reader

I have been telling you peeps the way you need to send me pictures so I feature you here, and some of you are still joking! As in really how difficult can that be?
So meet out first stylish reader, Angela rocking the african print!
We love that dress!

Meanwhile,  you know these days, the way I dont watch news, with everything being political and just bleh! aki our politicians are just shady!
Haya there is my MP, Gideon Mbuvi Mike Sonko (am from Makadara) who now wants to be Senator of NAIROBI!!!!!!. Aki nitahama! Look at the way he is ooozing Pimp juice like a nonsense!! My ushago MP now is another one, aki I cant even start! This is a fashion blog so I will not get into politics, lakini Hon. Mak Ajwang' sasa ile room ya mabati imechoka in Mbita, which  is now brown ndio unaita immigration office; Una embarass ja luo for nothing.

Anyway You just GO OUT AND  REGISTER!!! The registry points are everywhere, here in South B, they are even outside Naivas!
Kuna vile somebody thought all registration centers are in one direction!  I dont know why somebody would come to that conclusion, but this is Kenya!

Another thing, now I have to give the blog another subtittle and we move from In the footsteps of Sai Sankoh, so I need suggestions, and please dont say Kenyan Girls Killing It, because you know and I know we are not killing it as yet, either that or we over killed it in the 50s ime kufa kabisa!

Cheers People and sorry for the long delay!
Its 11pm and a plot of Sailors has just shown up, how do I looooove december!!! there is that song of oh the weather outside is dreadful and there is baileys inside, what is it called?

Oh and I have some some great treats coming up; lots of music and fashion!! so keep it close, and ile story ya Drum and the billboard, I have not forgotten!!
I had promised that I would find out the designers who were at Swahili Fashion Week and give you their details. The above collection is from SHENU HOODA, she is pakistani, but lives here. (I think), I loooooved her collection, I can see me in these, was one of my favourites!!! I have not found out more about her on the net, because I only looked on facebook:-) am a graduate of Rusinga Institute of Incomplete Research but am on it. I have her phone number if you are interested though.

Now on Today's Look, aki I need a good camera, do cameras have a reset to factory settings thing? I will have to fix this. I had everything on almost perfect and the shots were a disappointment so, please please bear with me (I always wanted to use that phrase bear with me) I did not go to school for nothing!
Liz and I are going to Toi next weekend, so those who want to jump on that band wagon, buzz a woman.

I am very excited, today I had over 1000 views, how coolest is that?!! Thank you ladies.
Angelina took Nancie Mwai's advice here on Fashion Notebook, She went to Ebrahims and got the Himalaya face scrub, and lip balm and we already love!!!

Since Julliet is still taking time with that eyebrow tutorial, I found a video on the DONTS! you can thank me later. Hata afadhali uwache tu, just dont touch that area if you are not sure, you know the way Charity Ngilu does it.

On being Perfect... and why the hell NOT??!!

So, I have been reading these things circulating on the net that starts like this.... I may not be perfect but... I may not have a supermodel figure but I am sijui whuat not" I say FUUCK THAT SHIT! You are perfect, infact saa hii just go to the bathroom look at yourself in the mirror and say I am perfect. If you are having body issues that we all have you can do something about it, but if you are okay with everything the hell is someone depressing you with stories za am not perfect.

But just because nime sema you are perfect usijaribu maneno kama hii, Infact if your friend is walking around like this buy her razors, makasi, gillette,  and do the way my friend Sandie advised me on how to deal people I know with smelly mouths. Walk over and tell him/her "I am bored, let's go brush out teeths"
But do not let your friend walk out like this, even you ukiangalia hii Naro Moru Natural Forest under this woman's arms do you think it is nice? Jesus wants you to shave!
